July 1:
Canada Day Celebrations
Canada Day is a community-oriented, family event on July 1, celebrating our national pride and heritage. The year 2012 will be the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 as well as the 25th year of The Friends of Fort George organizing the community event. We once again look forward to welcoming our local residents and visitors to enjoy music and entertainment in Simcoe Park with Frankie Phelan's Dixieland Five Plus Two during the afternoon and an antique auto display by the Rainbow Region of the Antique & Classic Car Club of Canada. Local heritage groups will be invited to setup displays in Simcoe Park to highlight their activities during 2012.
Fort George will be open and free all day and evening. The evening show will feature the Fort George Fife and Drum Corps, 1812 military demonstrations by the 41st Regiment Infantry and Artillery and youngsters in the audience will be recruited to once again join the Kiddie Militia. Closing off the evening with lively music to get you on your feet and dancing and - back by popular demand – are More Bad News and the Horns from Hell. A grand fireworks finale will close the evening at Fort George.
Willow Cakes and Pastries will once again create a 4' x 8' masterpiece cake, decorated with an 1812 theme. The cake will be paraded down Queen Street to Simcoe Park by the 41st Regiment Fife and Drum Corps where it will be served, free to the public, by local dignitaries.
Food services will be available all day. Start the day with a pancake breakfast in Simcoe Park, served up by The Friends of Fort George. A barbeque lunch in Simcoe Park will be served up by the Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club and during the evening, hamburgers and hotdogs will be available at Fort George.
